Boxing needs to make significant changes to stay competitive in the world of combat sports. Over the past 25 years, MMA, particularly the UFC, has risen to the forefront, surpassing boxing as the top combat sport in the USA and other parts of the world. The UFC’s strategic expansion into South America, Europe, and Asia is evidence of the sport’s growing popularity. Looking ahead, it’s crucial to consider how combat sports will evolve in the next decade. At the professional level, I advocate for reducing the number of weight classes, having only one champion per weight class, and reinstating 15-round title fights. Additionally, it’s important to recognize female and white-collar boxers’ vital role in revitalizing grassroots boxing. Many gyms would struggle without their involvement. While 15-round title fights may be unlikely, I propose that female boxers at least fight 12 2-minute rounds. These changes could help boxing regain prominence and appeal to a wider audience.
