Boxing, since the downfall of Mike Tyson, has declined to a niche sport, and women’s boxing is a niche within a niche. I’ve seen some advertise the Hammer vs. Shields fight as the most important fight in the history of women’s boxing. In my opinion, it isn’t, and pre-fight, it’s not in the top five. The most important fight in the history of women’s boxing took place in March 1996 on the undercard of a Mike Tyson fight when Christy Martin defeated Deirdre Gogarty (UD-6) in a bloodbath. That fight ushered in the modern era of women’s boxing and made Christ Martin a household name.
